Ellie graduated from Davidson College with a degree in Political Science in 2009. She graduated from Duke Law School in 2013. During law school, she interned with multiple indigent defense and capital defense organizations and worked with the Innocence Project. After law school, she served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Francisco A. Besosa in the District of Puerto Rico. She began working as a Research and Writing Specialist with the Federal Public Defender's Office in 2014, and as an Assistant Federal Defender in 2016. Ellie is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the First Circuit Court of Appeals Bar.
